Important Message
As we look beyond the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, I want to thank the Spirit of BC Community Committees making Spirit of BC such an outstanding program, reaching every corner of the province.
A recent poll conducted after the conclusion of the 2010 Olympics Winter Games shows that people across Canada believe that hosting the 2010 Winter Games brought substantial benefits for Canada and British Columbia. In fact, among British Columbians alone, 80 per cent saw some or great benefits for BC.
This is in no small part thanks to our Spirit of BC Chairs and the amazing volunteers who have given their time to over 90 Spirit of BC community committees over the last six years. The entire province truly felt the spirit of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games long before the Olympic and Paralympic cauldrons were lit.
As we sunset the Spirit of BC program, many communities will continue to carry on Spirit of BC community committees in various ways. The Abbotsford Spirit of BC Community Committee, for example, will not be continuing on under the Spirit of BC banner but has instead worked with their stakeholders to create Volunteer Abbotsford, a community volunteer centre that works to match volunteers with non-profit organizations.
With the 2010 Winter Games complete, 2010 Legacies Now is beginning to implement our plans for the long-term future of our organization, building on our experience in helping social organizations create large scale and lasting impacts across B.C. and Canada. 2010 Legacies Now will work with high-potential non-profit organizations to significantly improve and expand their social reach by entering into an intensive partnership to provide funding, business planning, mentorship and other support. We will collaborate with innovative non-profit organizations that are working to achieve major social change in the areas of literacy, lifelong learning, sport and healthy living.
