Best-selling Canadian children’s author David Bouchard reads from his books and talks about how educators and parents can promote literacy. Bouchard, a former teacher and principal, will address school groups at private functions during the day and the community at large during the evening presentation.

A fun event that celebrates Kimberley’s commitment to including everyone in the excitement and benefits leading up to the 2010 Winter Games. The event will showcase the community’s inclusive spirit and features a Friendship Centre hockey challenge with local First Nations, fire spinners and snow sculptures. Light refreshments will be available.

Art lovers can celebrate the Okanagan Valley’s artistic achievements with the Okanagan Arts Awards, created to recognize individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in the arts, for significant contribute to the arts or for noteworthy arts support. The awards ceremony is open to the public and will include a special Spirit of BC Week showcase that features performances, installation artwork and digital presentations from Okanagan Valley artists. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Tickets $25.




Maple Ridge

Spirit of BC Celebrates BC150 Years – First Annual Spirit of Wood Festival
Saturday, Feb. 16, Sunday, Feb. 17

Eat like a logger at a lumberjack pancake breakfast on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Memorial Peace Park, then check out a chainsaw carving competition from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A community wood carving will be unveiled at the Maple Ridge Public Library at 5-7 p.m. Sunday’s events include a woods showcase and sale that features the work of wood crafters, artists, builders and suppliers. The showcase runs 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Maple Ridge Arts Centre and Theatre.
