FAQ

Q: When is the 2008 Altitude Youth Experience leadership retreat going to take place?
A: The 2008 Altitude Youth Experience leadership retreat will take place October 3-5, 2008 in Squamish, BC.
Q: When is the deadline for applications?
A: The application deadline for the 2008 Altitude Youth Experience is Friday, May 30, 2008 at 3 pm (PST).
Q: How do I apply?
A: All applicants must fill in an Altitude Youth Experience form which can be accessed here. All applications must be accompanied by a personal submission, resume and two letters of reference. Applications that do not include all of these items will not be considered.
Q: How old do I have to be to participate?
A: Participants MUST be between the ages of 16 and 18 as of October 3, 2008. Sorry, but we are unable to select candidates under 16 years of age.
Q: Will my costs be covered?
A: Yes. Altitude Youth Experience will cover all costs for successful applicants. These costs include:
  • Travel, including return ground or air travel from your hometown to Vancouver and return ground transportation from Vancouver to Squamish
  • Accommodation
  • Meals and snacks
Q: Will there be adult supervision throughout the weekend?
A: Yes. Adult chaperones will be on-site for the duration of the weekend, including at the airport or ferry terminal at the time of your arrival. All chaperones will have passed a criminal record check.
Q: What should I pack for the weekend?
A: As many of the Altitude Youth Experience activities take place outdoors, participants should come prepared for all weather conditions. Below is a suggested list of items.
  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Flashlight
  • Towel
  • Pair of hiking boots and extra pair of shoes
  • Rain coat and rain pants
  • Long sleeve tops
  • Long pants
  • Fleece jacket or sweater
  • Toque or warm hat
  • Pair of gloves (good for nights around the campfire)
  • Extra socks
  • T-shirts
  • Camera
Q: What type of accommodations should I expect?
A: Participants will stay in single-sex, dorm-style rooms. Rooms will be assigned upon arrival. Participants are required to bring their own pillow and sleeping bag.
Q: What is Spirit of BC?
Spirit of BC is a province-wide program with a network of 100 Spirit of BC community committees, each telling a different part of the story of British Columbia. After the Altitude Youth Experience leadership retreat, participants will be invited to join their local Spirit of BC community committee and will be required to plan two youth-oriented events throughout the year.
