NEW PROGRAM TO RAISE THE POTENTIAL OF B.C. YOUTH
Vancouver, B.C. (September 6, 2007): Spirit of BC®, supported by 2010 Legacies Now and the Province of B.C., is introducing Altitude Youth Experience, a new program that will provide opportunities for B.C. youth to gain leadership skills and make a difference in their community.
"2010 Legacies Now encourages British Columbians to get involved in their communities, and Altitude Youth Experience gives B.C. youth a chance to do that in a unique way," said Bruce Dewar, CEO of 2010 Legacies Now. "Successful applicants will become youth members of their local Spirit of BC community committee. As they work with community leaders, participating youth will learn new skills, build their resume and help create legacies that will benefit people of all ages."
Altitude Youth Experience is open to B.C. youth aged 16 to 18, and application forms are available online at www.SpiritofBC.com. Up to 60 young people will be invited to join a Spirit of BC® committee and attend a leadership retreat at Camp Summit in Squamish.
Altitude Youth Experience is linked with Spirit of BC®, a province-wide program managed by 2010 Legacies Now that promotes community innovation, pride and excellence, and involves British Columbians in the opportunities arising from the 2010 Winter Games. There are more than 95 Spirit of BC® committees representing 200 communities across the province. Supported by 2010 Legacies Now and the Province of B.C., these committees aim to inspire people of all ages to address needs in their community related to sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.
"It's important for the youth of our province to know they have a voice and can make a difference in their community," said Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. "This new program will encourage young people around British Columbia to share, and help implement, ideas for building stronger communities and celebrating local achievements."
"The young people who join our committees will bring fresh energy, new ideas and a youth perspective that will inform our brainstorming and decision-making," said Nora Hunt-Haft, co-chair of the Penticton Spirit of BC Community Committee. "Their contributions will help us as we develop programs and celebrations that include all members of the community."
