ABBOTSFORD SPIRIT OF BC COMMUNITY COMMITTEE HOSTS REGIONAL ROUNDTABLE

Vancouver, BC (October 5, 2006): The Abbotsford Spirit of BC Community Committee has partnered with 2010 Legacies Now to host a roundtable for Spirit of BC Community Committees in the Fraser Valley region.

"Each of the Fraser Valley committees has been very successful in supporting a range of important community initiatives," said Allen Langdon, director of Spirit of BC Community Committees for 2010 Legacies Now. "This roundtable will help them explore the benefits of working together as a region."

The roundtable runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in Abbotsford. Attendees will include representatives from the following communities or Spirit of BC Community Committees: Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Hope, Kent-Harrison, Langley, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, Mission, Surrey, Tri-Cities and White Rock.

"People who live in the Fraser Valley have a lot of community pride, and our committees are looking ahead to Spirit of BC Week 2007, the 2010 Winter Games and beyond," said Christine Wiebe, chair of the Abbotsford Spirit of BC Community Committee. "By working together, we can showcase the things that make our region unique and use our strengths to ensure Fraser Valley communities share in the benefits of B.C. hosting the 2010 Winter Games. The more we have to offer in this region, the easier it will be to attract first-time and repeat visitors."

Two guest speakers will provide inspiration for strategic planning: Stephanie Herdman, communications coordinator for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), and Betty McLeod, senior manager of Olympic business development at RBC Financial Group.

"This is a great chance for an update on VANOC and its progress and planning to date," said Herdman. "I'm looking forward to providing some insight and lessons we learned at the Torino 2006 Winter Games, as well as a timeline of our key activities that lie ahead on the road to 2010."

"RBC is helping businesses and communities across B.C. identify, and respond to, the business opportunities presented by the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," said McLeod. "I'll be talking about what communities can do right now and in the future to bid on 2010 Winter Games contracts or get involved in other important ways."

Supported by 2010 Legacies Now and the Province of British Columbia, Spirit of BC Community Committees are working to build community spirit and pride, and to strengthen sport and recreation, arts, literacy and volunteerism in their communities. There are more than 90 committees representing more than 200 communities across the province.
