QUESNEL AND PENTICTON REPRESENTATIVES JOIN SPIRIT OF BC PROVINCIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Vancouver, B.C. (November 8, 2007): Spirit of BC® is pleased to announce Councillor Mary Sjostrom, chair of the Quesnel Spirit of BC® Community Committee, and Nora Hunt-Haft, co-chair of the Penticton Spirit of BC® Community Committee, are now members of the Spirit of BC® provincial advisory committee.
Sjostrom and Hunt-Haft join members from Comox Valley, Trail, Vanderhoof, Prince George, Abbotsford and Powell River.
"Mary Sjostrom and Nora Hunt-Haft are very dedicated and effective chairs who have had a tremendous impact in their communities," said Allen Langdon, director of Spirit of BC® for 2010 Legacies Now™. "We are very pleased they have agreed to take on this role and help ensure our program is moving in the right direction and gaining momentum across the province."
The Spirit of BC® provincial advisory committee was formed in 2006 to provide input and advice regarding the ongoing development of the Spirit of BC® program. Supported by 2010 Legacies Now™ and the Province of B.C., Spirit of BC® is a province-wide program that promotes community innovation, pride and excellence, and involves British Columbians in the opportunities arising from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
More than 95 Spirit of BC® committees, representing more than 200 B.C. communities, are working to inspire people of all ages to address local needs related to sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.
"I am pleased to be part of the team that will engage the community in the opportunities arising from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," said Sjostrom. "I want to help Quesnel and the Cariboo region take full advantage leading up to 2010 and beyond."
"This is a great way to ensure the Thompson-Okanagan region is involved in the decision-making process," said Hunt-Haft. "It’s good to know the specific needs of our region are being considered as we discuss future initiatives."
The Spirit of BC® provincial advisory committee meets, via telephone, with the director of the Spirit of BC® program on a monthly basis. Members provide advice and feedback on program development from a community perspective.
"Nora has been an integral part of her community committee and the experience she has taken from that will be immensely beneficial on the provincial level," said Rick Thorpe, MLA for Okanagan-Westside. "I wish her the best of luck on her new position."
