PRINCE GEORGE SPIRIT OF BC COMMUNITY COMMITTEE TO HOST REGIONAL ROUNDTABLE
Vancouver, B.C. (Nov. 16, 2006): 2010 Legacies Now and the Prince George Spirit of BC Community Committee are hosting a regional roundtable for Spirit of BC Community Committees in the North.
"Members of the northern committees have been doing wonderful work in their own communities, supporting a range of activities and celebrating local achievements," said Allen Langdon, director of Spirit of BC Community Committees for 2010 Legacies Now. "This roundtable will give them a chance to share success stories and explore the benefits of working together as a region."
The roundtable runs all day Nov. 16 at the Coast Inn of the North. Attendees will include representatives from the following Spirit of BC Community Committees: Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. James, Kermode, McBride, Smithers, Vanderhoof and Williams Lake.
Three guest speakers will provide inspiration for strategic planning: Aaron Sinclair, senior manager and deputy for B.C. North, commercial financial services, Royal Bank of Canada; Chris Gudgeon, project manager for B.C. 2008, Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts; Ken Veldman, business connections manager, 2010 Commerce Centre; and Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen, who is Minister responsible for the Olympics.
"As we get closer to the 2010 Winter Games, the opportunities will become even greater and we want communities of every size and from every region involved," said Hansen. "Through events like this roundtable, we hope to help communities turn their Olympic dreams into reality."
"B.C.'s northern communities are a long way from Vancouver and Whistler, but we intend to share in the benefits of B.C. hosting the 2010 Winter Games," said Mayor Colin Kinsley, chair of the Prince George Spirit of BC Community Committee. "By working together, we can ensure our region continues to grow, leading up to the 2010 Winter Games and beyond."
Supported by 2010 Legacies Now and the Province of B.C., Spirit of BC is a province-wide initiative that promotes community innovation, pride and excellence, and involves British Columbians in the opportunities arising from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. There are more than 90 Spirit of BC Community Committees representing more than 200 communities across the province.
Spirit of BC Community Committees and their partners lead events and activities during Spirit of BC Week, an annual celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. In 2007, Spirit of BC Week will run Feb. 9-17.
